At the Public Swimming Pool

There’s a lot of people in the shower
at the public swimming pool

women with fat bottoms

kids with bellies sticking out

a girl with a tattoo
Suds slop across the floor,
surf headed down the drain

Some stand at the showerhead

face at the nozzle like a microphone

hear me now watch me roar

Others bow their heads beneath the spray

doing penance for a crime

Some have not moved.  Hours have passed and they are human prunes

For others, water is a machine, apply systematically,

here, then there, then here again.

Still others wrap their arms around it like their lover.

Some stand well back, least it bite. They don’t want to get involved

in any hasty affair.

The sign says

please limit showers to

3 minutes while others are waiting
Yet there is no clock

Only a sea of naked people
under the shower at the public swimming pool.
