What is the role of a writer in building a Web site?

Writers are information-organizers, communicators, entertainers and idea generators. Each of these roles can go into developing content for a site.

Once the scope of the content has been decided, a site map is developed. The writer may develop this map, or the information architect, designer, or project manager. The writer will suggest or write menu names for each directory.

When does copywriting begin?
When the draft site map is complete, copywriting begins. Ideally, copy is developed before site design, or in conjunction with it. This is because the content will define the topic in greater detail, and provide the designer with a solid feel for the topic.

Also, when content is written, the site map may change slightly. This is particularly true of sub-index pages, where topics may be broken down further into smaller-sized pages to aid readability.

The draft is ready
Once the draft is ready, the client or art director approves the content and site design begins. At this early stage, the writer and designer discuss concepts for content layout, to ensure the meaning of the text is conveyed effectively and creatively.

The last step
After the site is built, the writer does a final proofing of the copy. This is an important quality control step, as there may be small changes like adding a line or bolding text that improve readability.
